What is V2L? Everything you need to know about Vehicle-to-Load

What is V2L? Use your electric car as power for home, camping and emergency power

V2L stands for Vehicle-to-Load – a technology that makes it possible to use your electric car as a power source. Instead of just charging the car, you can also draw power from it.

It opens up a whole new way of thinking about energy – whether you are at home, camping, at work or in an emergency.

How does V2L work?

Your electric car has a large battery – typically between 40 and 100 kWh. With V2L, you can draw power from the battery and use it to power appliances, tools or even an entire house.

The power is supplied as 230V alternating current – just like a regular socket. You connect a V2L adapter cable to the car, and at the other end you get a plug that can be used for everything from coffee machines and refrigerators to heat pumps and power tools.

Which cars support V2L?

V2L is becoming more and more widespread, and many modern electric cars already support the technology – either directly from the factory or via external solutions.

Your car doesn't have V2L? Then you can add it

Not all electric cars come with V2L from the factory. But that doesn't have to stop you.

With our external 5 kW V2L discharger, you can add V2L functionality to almost any electric car. It plugs into the car's Type 2 charging socket and draws power from the battery with up to 5 kW of power.

That's actually more than many cars with built-in V2L can deliver.

Advantages of external V2L solution

✅ Up to 5 kW output
✅ Works on many more cars
✅ Can be integrated with solar inverters
✅ Perfect for emergency power and house supply
✅ More power than standard V2L in many cars

Note: The external discharger is not intended for direct rain or snow. Place it in a protected location – e.g. under a carport, in an open garage or on a trolley under a roof.

What can you use V2L for?

Car to house – use the car as power for the home

With the right setup, you can feed power from your car into your home's electrical system via a hybrid or solar inverter. This upgrades V2L to V2H (Vehicle-to-Home).

It allows you to:

  • Reduce power consumption from the electricity grid during the most expensive hours
  • Use the car battery as an energy buffer
  • Combine with solar cells and home battery
  • Have backup power in case of power outages

Car to car – charge another electric car

With V2L you can transfer power directly between two electric cars.

Typical charging power

  • Built-in V2L: up to approximately 3.7 kW
  • External discharger: up to 5 kW

Perfect for emergencies, camping or off-grid use.

Car to caravan – 230V without generator

With V2L you can take 230V power camping without noisy generators or fixed shore power.

You can, among other things, operate:

  • Coffee machine
  • Refrigerator
  • Air conditioning
  • Lighting and electronics
  • Charging batteries

Emergency power – backup when the power goes out

When the power goes out, your electric car can keep your home running for several days, depending on battery size and consumption.

A 77 kWh battery can typically keep a refrigerator, lights, internet, heat pump and electronics running for a long time.

This provides extra security by:

  • Power outages
  • Storms
  • Power grid failure
  • Off-grid use

How much power can an electric car deliver?

With built-in V2L

  • 8A = approx. 1.8 kW
  • 10A = approximately 2.3 kW
  • 13A = approx. 3.0 kW
  • 16A = approx. 3.7 kW

With external 5 kW discharger

  • Up to 5.0 kW continuous output

In comparison, 3.7 kW is enough to simultaneously operate a heat pump, refrigerator, lights and electronics in many homes.

Safety – advanced software monitoring protects the car

Many people ask if it is safe to use V2L. The answer is yes.

Car manufacturers have developed advanced software-based monitoring systems that constantly monitor power output and protect both the battery and electronics.

The car automatically stops power delivery when:

  • Error
  • Overload
  • Low battery percentage
  • Abnormal conditions

This is precisely why V2L is a factory-supported feature in modern electric cars.
